The Immoral List

Explanation: Curtis Reeves was a 71-year-old retired Tampa police captain. On January 13, 2014, he went to a Wesley Chapel, Florida, movie theater with his wife to see Lone Survivor. During the previews, he noticed Chad Oulson, 43, using his phone to text. Reeves reportedly asked him to put it away. The two argued, and things escalated when Oulson allegedly threw popcorn at Reeves.

Moments later, Reeves pulled out a handg*n and sh8t Oulson in the chest, k*lling him. Oulson’s wife, who was sitting beside him, was also injured by the bullet grazing her hand as she tried to protect her husband.

In court, Reeves’ defense argued that he feared for his life and acted in self-defense, invoking Florida’s Stand Your Ground law. While, Prosecutors argued that a bag of popcorn was not a d*adly threat and that Reeves overreacted.

The legal process dragged on for years with multiple hearings and delays. Finally, in February 2022, after an 8-year wait, a jury found Reeves not guilty of second-degree m*rder. They sided with his claim of self-defense, concluding he reasonably feared for his safety during the confrontation.

“He only threw the popcorn at him… So far… How much further would he have gone? How much further could he have gone? The other man is an old man after all. What hope did he have against a man half his age? One punch could have killed him easily. So yeah even though it’s “only popcorn” it’s still assault and battery. So the old man was well within his right to stand his ground and shoot.”
